The Economic Stimulus Bill provides an added incentive for homeowners who are considering the purchase of energy efficient windows. On top of the considerable long-term savings that result from high-performance window installation, homeowners can now save 30 percent on their purchase. The savings can add up to $1,500, which will be deducted from this year's income taxes. The bill also extends the tax credit through 2010. For more information, go to the US Department of Energy's Tax Credit information website.
The Department of Energy approved a new label on June 1 to designate windows, doors and skylights that meet the minimum criteria for the federal tax credit. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act requires fenestration products to have U-Factors/SHGGs of at least 0.30/0.30, which are more stringent requirements than the current Energy Star limits. Learn more about the new label.
According to a survey sponsored by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), consumers look for energy performance and durability when they window shop. The survey also finds that consumers buy new windows mostly to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Go to Survey.
